Entre 1993 et 1997, Markus Lüpertz a réalisé, sur le même motif, un ensemble d’œuvres, plusieurs centaines, dont le titre générique Männer ohne Frauen (Hommes sans femmes) lui aurait laissé toute latitude si le nom de Parsifal qui lui est associé n’était venu suggérer un sens apparemment plus précis, inséparable de l’opéra de Richard Wagner créé à Bayreuth en 1882 d’après Wolfram von Eschenbach et d’un mythe dont l’histoire moderne et sa capacité d’interprétation n’ont pas épuisé les ressources, pas plus d’ailleurs que celles d’Orphée, Ulysse, Jason et autres.
From 1993 to 1997, Markus Lüpertz created a body of work, several hundred in all, on the same motif. The generic title he chose, Männer ohne Frauen [Men Without Women], granted him complete freedom, until the name Percival came to him, with its seemingly more precise meaning, evoking Richard Wagner’s opera of that name, created in Bayreuth in 1882, itself inspired by Wolfram von Eschenbach’s poem and by the legend of Percival (a myth that has not been exhausted by modern history and its capacity for interpretation, any more than those of Orpheus, Ulysses, Jason, and others have been).
