Avec Lucien, on parle souvent de « figuration désincarnée », à la fois pour décrire cette sensation étrange, mais aussi pour qualifier sa peinture, et celle d’un nombre non négligeable d’artistes de notre génération, ayant grandi dans les années 1990, c’est-à-dire le moment charnière qui a vu le virtuel et internet, en tout cas le www, nous tomber dessus franchement. Les artistes de la figuration désincarnée ont toutes et tous la particularité de représenter la virtualité en recourant à la peinture : les volumes en polygones, les couleurs criardes, du magenta au vert Atari, les ciels crépusculaires de Doom sans intempéries, les regards sans vie des avatars, leurs mouvements un peu incohérents… Une peinture qui propose, en fait, de réincarner cette figuration sans vie, de donner de l’être à l’iconographie de la virtualité, à y mettre la matière et la physicalité qui y manque.
We often speak of “disembodied figuration,” both to describe this strange sensation, but also to qualify Murat’s painting and that of a significant number of artists of his generation, having grown up in the 1990s, the pivotal moment that saw the virtual and the Internet, or at least the world wide web, fall on us frankly. The artists of “disembodied figuration” all have the particularity of representing the virtual by resorting to painting: the volumes in polygons, the garish colors, from magenta to Atari green, the twilight skies of Doom without weather, the lifeless looks of avatars, their movements a little incoherent… A painting that proposes, in fact, to reincarnate this lifeless figuration, to give a reality to the iconography of virtuality, to give it matter and a physicality that it lacks.
